Every year on the 8th of June, The Noakes Foundation commemorates and honours the inspiring legacy of Prof Tim Noakes and his contributions towards the LCHF mandate to reverse years of improper nutritional teachings, insufficient treatment, and outlook on Type 2 diabetes globally, along with other non-communicable diseases of lifestyle.
#NoakesDay is a significant occasion to the LCHF community, as well as being an important day to everyone at The Noakes Foundation, Eat Better South Africa (EBSA) and the Nutrition Network. We commemorate this day as three years ago Prof. Noakes was exonerated of all charges made against him by the HPCSA.
Prof. Noakes’ vision for a healthier human future became a reality with the founding of The Noakes Foundation in 2012. His vision has subsequently grown into numerous projects and organisations dedicated to public benefit and helping to prevent and manage non-communicable diseases in areas that are harshly affected, including severely under-resourced communities in South Africa.
Prof so eloquently recaps and summarises the events and struggles of his trial in this short video clip.

Although he may have had many struggles with the medical establishment, Prof. Noakes rose above and trudged on with his fight against dishonest science and academic bullying. He has shown immense bravery during his academic career and when faced with adversity has met it head on!
He has subsequently gone on to achieve countless accolades and has been recognised by numerous institutes and organisations as an expert in his field. He has worked tirelessly to publish over 750 scientific books and articles, many of which have received marvellous praise. You can follow the link here to view some of his published works. His passion for nutrition and sports science led him to have the prestigious International Cannes Grand Prix Award for Research in Medicine and Water bestowed upon him, for his riveting work on Exercise-associated hyponatremia (EAH). His work on EAH has had a fantastic impact in the field of Sports Science. You can obtain the book Waterlogged: The Serious Problem of Overhydration in Endurance Sports on Amazon or Loot.
Furthermore, he has been cited more than 21 000 times in scientific literature, has an H-index (self-citations included) of 77, an H-index (all citations) of 86 and has been rated an A1 scientist by the National Research Foundation of South Africa for a second 3-year term, as well as having received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the same foundation. In 2008, he became the first non-UK citizen to be recognized by the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine (UK) and was elected an honorary fellow for his scientific contributions.
Recently, Prof. Noakes article ‘The value (or otherwise) of Social Media to the Medical Professional: Some personal reflections’ was recently accepted by the Current Allergy and Clinical Immunology journal. The is a wonderful achievement for Prof. Noakes and is certainly considered another feather in an already very decorated hat.
Prof. Noakes has also published a new book, The Eat Right Revolution, in collaboration with Marika Sboros. It exposes the root causes of chronic, life-threatening comorbidities, such as obesity, type-2 diabetes, heart disease and more, and explains why LCHF and ketogenic diets can be safer, more effective solutions than drugs to beat these diseases.
“This is a book about how you eat healthy for life and maintain your metabolic health…and to address the real cause of our ill health, and that is a condition called insulin resistance or carbohydrate intolerance. ” – Prof. Noakes

Today, we not only celebrate Prof. Noakes for being exonerated of all claims made against him during his tedious trial, but we also pay homage to his constant pursuit of knowledge, his unbridled passion for science and his willingness to help people! Prof Noakes can truly be commended for his ability to implement change within the scientific community. Like other pioneers before him, he carved his own path and equipped the world with a way to combat diseases of lifestyle through changes in diet and exercise, without the need for medication. He did not waver in front of academic peers when they scoffed at his ideas, he stood headstrong in the face of adversity and believed in the sound research that he had conducted.
Prof. Noakes continues to engage with the community by taking part in discussions, has made himself available to participate on many editorial boards and is of course a constant source of knowledge and authority for The Noakes Foundation. He has been a devoted leader of the Nutrition Network and Eat Better South Africa, being a co-founder of both organisations.
Jayne Bullen, COO of The Noakes Foundation and co-founder of EBSA, aptly said in an open letter to Prof. Noakes, “The thing about him is that he doesn’t give up or buckle like the rest of us might. He doesn’t get bullied into silence and he doesn’t fault his beliefs or doubt them. He does his research. Like any true leader and coach, Prof really holds clear in his faith and knows that time and effort pay off. His own health and life is testament to his courage. He has placed his Type 2 diabetic into remission… This, in itself, is a remarkable feat that deserves extreme respect. He is also one of the true genius minds of our time and a real hero in our country.” Jayne’s letter truly encapsulates Prof Noakes’ legacy.
Thank you Prof. Noakes for your work, legacy and dedication to health for our nation and its future. We acknowledge your bravery and for fighting an incredible fight with energy, passion, humour, and unbelievable grace. Let us always remember and live by what you stand for.
