Every December, organisations, companies, and community groups rally together to spread joy through food hampers. It’s a tradition rooted in generosity and care, but have you ever stopped to think about what’s inside those hampers?
Too often, the default is to fill them with cheap, carb-heavy, sugary items. While these may stretch the budget and feel “festive,” they don’t always support long-term health. In fact, many recipients face chronic conditions like diabetes or hypertension, and the very foods we donate can unintentionally make things harder.
This year, we’re inviting organisations to rethink the hamper. With the same budget, you can offer a package that nourishes, sustains, and uplifts — one that says: we care about your health as much as we do your hunger.
And remember: Even if you can’t always afford to eat perfectly, you can always make better choices within your budget. There is a misconception that eating healthy is expensive, but you can always make better choices; it’s not about perfection, it’s about realistic, healthy choices that fit your means. That’s exactly what The Noakes Foundation and Eat Better South Africa support: eating better, not perfect.
