Overcoming Type 2 Diabetes: My Journey to Health and Fitness

In 2010, at just 37 years old, I received the life-altering diagnosis of type 2 diabetes. It wasn’t entirely unexpected, given the strong family history of diabetes and hypertension. Initially, my treatment involved insulin injections to manage my blood sugar levels. Upon discharge from the hospital, I was prescribed oral medications and put on a strict 2500-calorie meal plan comprising six small meals a day. The meal plan was meticulously designed to prevent hypoglycemia and included foods like rice, vegetables, fruits, oatmeal, and a special milk formula for diabetics.

Despite my efforts to manage my condition, I found myself struggling with weakness and fatigue, especially during exercise. To compensate, I often resorted to sugary energy drinks, unknowingly exacerbating my health issues. In hindsight, I realized that my approach to exercise was inadvertently increasing my sugar intake, leading to further complications.

By 2017, I had reached my heaviest weight, surpassing the capacity of a 350lb scale. My laboratory results were alarming, with an HbA1C level of 13.2 and other blood markers showing abnormalities. My doctor recommended insulin therapy as a last resort.

Determined to take control of my health, I embarked on a low-carb diet in January 2018, weighing approximately 155.3kg. Through dedication and perseverance, I gradually transitioned to a keto carnivore diet. By January 2019, I achieved a significant milestone—I was off all my type 2 diabetes medications. Even amidst the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, I had successfully put my diabetes into remission.

Today, at the age of 50, I am thriving in ways I never thought possible. I have embraced endurance running and recently completed my first marathon—a remarkable feat considering my past struggles with physical activity. From someone who could barely run 100 meters six years ago, this achievement fills me with immense pride and gratitude.

On a personal note, I am Gileo Sioson Alojado, a dedicated government employee, Certified Public Accountant, and Lawyer. I am happily married and committed to leading a life of health and vitality.

My journey serves as a testament to the transformative power of lifestyle changes and dietary modifications. Through perseverance, education, and support, I have reclaimed my health and embraced a future filled with limitless possibilities.
